Purple Rice and Fruity Fishes

Posted on: October 8, 2008

Awhile back, I got some black glutinous rice on a whim. Apparently it’s intended use is mostly things like Thai desserts. However, I found it a quite exciting alternative to regular rice when I needed a starchy accompaniment to assorted meats and/or fakemeats, plus vegetables.

So here’s something fun to do: Make whatever rice you ordinarily make and add in a small amount of black glutinous rice. It makes it all purple! I used brown rice below, but white would be even better for the purple, I bet! It was a very small amount of black glutinous rice that I used as well, something like 1/6 of a cup or so to 1 cup of the other rice. Super festive!

To accompany this, I baked some tilapia with a jar of fancy fruit dumped on top. It’s like I took the time to carve up a variety of fruit and mix it in with other ingredients to make a lush chunky glaze. Except I didn’t, since it came in an overpriced jar instead, yay! Thanks to my hookups, it was free at least. I highly approve of it’s flavor. Fruit + fish is generally better then the sum of it’s parts.
